Aguilera leads strong Top 10, but sales still lag

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - It's the same old song: Flashy news in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 while album sales continue to sag, a pattern that even a career-best opener by Christina Aguilera cannot bend.

Fact is, with her new Nielsen SoundScan mark and six new titles entering the chart's first eight slots, the top 10 looks pretty healthy.

Aguilera's "Back to Basics" racks up 342,000 sales in its opening frame, beating her previous best start by 4.5 percent, set when last album "Stripped" bowed at No. 2 with 330,000 copies in 2002.

"Basics" is followed by new sets from R&B sophomore Lyfe Jennings (136,000), country stalwart Trace Adkins (115,000), new R&B ensemble Cherish (91,000) and the soundtrack to "The Cheetah Girls 2" (87,000), marking only the third time in the 50-year history of Billboard's album chart that five new entries occupy the first five slots.

Commerce from those five and the return of rapper Obie Trice (No. 8, 74,000) help deliver more volume in the top 10 than the chart saw in the same week last year, up by 6 percent. But none of that prevents an overall decline, with total albums missing the comparable 2005 frame by 6.7 percent. That deficit includes a 4.1 percent slip by catalog albums.

Mulling these numbers helps explain the odd juncture that finds the august Tower Records chain filing for bankruptcy just two weeks after winning its third straight Merchandiser of the Year award at the recent National Association of Recording Merchandisers convention.

And, while intense price competition from mass merchants and electronics chains has helped complicate life for Tower and other traditional music stores, it doesn't even look like the lowballers are having fun.

Year to date, mass merchants' album sales stand at 133.5 million units, down about 3 percent from the same point last year. Continued...

AGUILERA TOPS UK ALBUM CHART

CHRISTINA AGUILERA's new LP BACK TO BASICS has shot straight to the top of the UK album chart.

The disc is Aguilera's third release, but it's the first time she has topped the British charts.

It knocks JAMES MORRISON's UNDISCOVERED to number two, with SNOW PATROL at three, ORSON four and THE KOOKS five.

SHAKIRA has made it four weeks in a row at the top of the singles chart with HIPS DON'T LIE. CHAMILLIONAIRE is number two with RIDIN', DAVID GUETTA VS THE EGG is three with LOVE DON'T LET ME GO (WALKING AWAY); ARCTIC MONKEYS are four and CASCADA five.

Christina Aguilera to perform at VMAs

Christina Aguilera and The All-American Rejects will be among the performers at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards.

The awards show will air live from New York's Radio City Music Hall on Aug. 31 (8 p.m. EDT), with Jack Black as host. Previously announced performers include Beyonce, Panic! at the Disco, T.I., the Killers, Ludacris with Pharrell, the Raconteurs and Justin Timberlake.

The show will include appearances by Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Chris Brown, Fall Out Boy, Rihanna, Jared Leto, Busta Rhymes, Shaun White, Ne-Yo, Missy Elliott, Lil Jon and Nick Lachey, MTV announced Wednesday.

Aguilera is nominated for video of the year for "Ain't No Other Man." She's also up for best female video, best pop video and best choreography in a video.

The All-American Rejects are nominated for best group video and best editing in a video for "Move Along."

Timberlake, who snagged a best male video award in 2003 for "Cry Me a River," will perform his new single, "SexyBack."

Christina Aguilera has given up junk food - because she is paranoid she will have a heart attack.

The 'Dirrty' singer is a self-confessed junk food addict, but insists she only eats it very rarely she is too worried about the health implications of munching on it.

She told Britain's TV Hits magazine: "I am a junk food lover but I've had to curb that quite a bit since I'm not a teenager any more. I think it's important to take care of yourself, especially as a woman. Mostly I think it's really about curbing that so you don't get heart disease or cancer or anything like that."

She added: "I'm just trying to take care of myself, trying to get as much rest as possible, exercising every day and being healthy and getting my beauty sleep. I do a lot of weight training and some cardio - I like feeling strong."

Pop star Christina Aguilera has opened up about her attraction to women.
The 25-year-old singer, who married music producer Jordan Bratman last year, told New York's HX magazine that she eschews labels. But she revealed: "I do think the female body is beautiful, and sometimes I get more pleasure looking at a nude female body than a male's, depending on who that is.
"It's a very sensual thing, the female body, and I have an appreciation for it."
Aguilera told the magazine she wasn't surprised when former N'Sync singer Lance Bass announced he is gay. "I'm shocked that it's a big deal! I'm shocked that people are shocked. When I heard of it, I shrugged my shoulders and said, 'Good for him!'"

New Aguilera album leaks onto Internet

Despite attempts to increase security for U.S. pop star Christina Aguilera's new album "Back to Basics," snippets of the album are showing up online.
TMZ.com reported that 30-second bits of all the tracks from the two-disc project were available on the Internet during the last week of July, long before the album's scheduled release date of Aug. 15.
While no full version of "Basics" was been offered anywhere online, the leak of portions of the album reflects an ongoing trend in the music industry.
Over the last couple years numerous major releases from popular musical acts such as 50 Cent and U2 have found their way onto Internet file-sharing services, prompting most music studios to increase their security measures.
While RCA Records was not entirely successful in maintaining the security for the "Genie in a Bottle" singer's new album, it was credited in many online forums by Aguilera fans for keeping the full version of the album under wraps, the Web site said.

Aguilera "Back" with ambitious album

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - While recording her upcoming album "Back to Basics," a project inspired by music and images from the '20s, '30s and '40s, Christina Aguilera had a secret weapon -- bright red lipstick as shiny as a fire engine.

"Just to get into the song," she says, "to convey that emotion and high energy, especially to belt out some notes, the red lipstick helped me get to that mind frame."

Saluting artists from the past was a role Aguilera was born to play. Since her RCA debut seven years ago, the 25-year-old has talked about her love for such torch and blues singers as Etta James.
